Julia Fiona Roberts was born in Atlanta on October 28, 1967 as the daughter of Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts. Roberts is part of four generations of the Robertses who reside in the Atlanta area beginning in the family of her grand-father John Pendleton Roberts a farmer. At an early age his father became obsessed by the theater. While he was a students in Emory University from 1952 to 1954, he participated in several performances. When he joined the Air Force, in 1953 he appeared in an airforce production in Biloxi together with Betty Lou Bredemus. In 1955, the couple got married and their child Eric Anthony was born. Walter along with his wife left the military in and enrolled Walter as a student at Tulane University. Walter joined Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio when the family moved from Atlanta to Decatur, Georgia in 1960. Walter along with Betty Lou started production in 1964 for the local children's Saturday morning television program Bum Bum and His Buddies, which they funded themselves. In 1964, Walter and Betty Lou founded the Actors and Writers Workshop. It ran for six years. The couple also had two children, Lelisa Billingsley (1965) (also known by the name Lisa) as well as Julia Billingsley (1967) (also known by the same name Julie).
